Samuel William Teece, Age 32

Private, 15347, 7th Battalion, Leinster Regiment.

Samuel was the son of Mr J H Teece of Plough Lane, Old Park. He had left home and was married by the outbreak of war, living in King Street, Dawley with his wife and two children, prior to joining up he had been employed at the Randley Brickworks and was a member of Court “Liberty” Ancient Order of Foresters of which his Father was secretary.

Samuel had initially joined the KSLI (33207) but at some point had been transferred to the Leinster’s. He became yet another casualty of the Third battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) when he was killed in action on the 14th August 1917. A few days earlier he had rescued a comrade in No Man’s Land after first throwing away his pack to enable him to carry the man in.

Two years to the day of Samuel’s death a notice appeared in the Shrewsbury & Wellington Journal on Saturday August 14th 1919:

Teece — In loving memory of my dearly beloved Husband and Father, Pte S. Teece, killed in action at Ypres, August 14th 1917.
“No loved ones stood beside him, Too hear his last farewell, No words of comfort could he had, from those who loved him well” — Deeply mourned by his sorrowing Wife and children, King Street, Dawley.

Samuel William Teece with his wife Mary Louisa (maiden name Biddulph) and son Irene Blanche born 08/06/1915, later they had another son Horace Samuel William born 22/02/1917.

In paying tribute to him at the Dawley Baptist Church the Reverend Arthur Lester said that Samuels views more nearly approached those of a genuine conscientious objector than any other local man that he had known. Of his death nothing was known except that private papers belonging to Samuel had been found on the battlefield and sent home by another soldier.

Samuel’s body is buried at Potijze Chateau Lawn cemetery on the outskirts of Ypres in Grave D. 12
